Shinseiki Asian Pear Tree

Shinseiki Asian Pear is a productive fruit tree known for its round, attractive yellow pears and crisp, juicy texture. The medium-to-large fruit has smooth yellow skin, creamy-white flesh, and a mild, pleasantly sweet flavor.

Unlike European pears that are normally picked firm and softened indoors, Shinseiki Asian pears develop their best eating quality while still crisp. The ripe fruit can be enjoyed directly from the tree and is excellent for fresh eating, fruit trays, salads, desserts, preserves, and canning.

Shinseiki is recommended by UF/IFAS for North Florida. Its moderate chill requirement and late flowering period make it a promising Asian pear for home orchards in the Florida Panhandle, although another compatible pear should be planted nearby for dependable fruit production.

UF/IFAS lists Shinseiki as a fresh-eating pear for North Florida with moderate resistance to fire blight. University of California information reports approximately 350–450 chill hours and describes its fruit as medium to large, round, yellow, crisp, and juicy.

Pollination Information

Shinseiki is sometimes described as partially self-fruitful because it may set a limited crop when planted alone under favorable conditions. However, UF/IFAS lists Shinseiki as requiring cross-pollination in Florida.

For the most dependable crop, plant Shinseiki near a different compatible pear that flowers at approximately the same time. Cross-pollination can also help produce larger, more evenly shaped fruit.

Best Pollinator Partners

• Hosui Asian Pear
• Chojuro Asian Pear
• 20th Century or Nijisseiki Asian Pear

Oklahoma State University lists Chojuro, 20th Century, and Hosui as compatible pollinators for Shinseiki. From the Asian pears we have recently discussed, Hosui is a suitable partner to feature with Shinseiki.

Bartlett may provide compatible pollen where its bloom overlaps, but I would not recommend it as the primary partner for North Florida because standard Bartlett is poorly suited to our fire-blight-prone Southern climate.

A generic Sand Pear should not be promised as a definite pollinator unless its exact variety and flowering period are known.

Bees and other pollinating insects are needed to carry pollen between the flowers.

North Florida Growing Note

Shinseiki is included in UF/IFAS’s list of pears suitable for North Florida. It flowers later than many low-chill Southern pears, which may reduce—but does not eliminate—the chance of blossom damage from an early spring freeze.

Plant Shinseiki in full sun and well-drained soil with enough space for good air circulation. Asian pear trees tend to produce upright branches with narrow crotch angles, so young trees may benefit from careful training to develop a stronger structure.

Shinseiki has moderate fire-blight resistance, but resistant does not mean immune. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer and severe pruning because both encourage tender, vigorous growth that is more vulnerable to fire blight.

Asian pears frequently set more fruit than the branches can properly support. Thin crowded fruit when young, leaving approximately one pear per cluster, to encourage better fruit size and reduce limb breakage.

Shinseiki fruit ripens on the tree. Harvest when the skin has changed from greenish yellow to a more even yellow color and the fruit tastes sweet and juicy. The pears should remain crisp rather than becoming soft like a European pear. Handle them carefully because their high juice content makes them easy to bruise.
